The Former “Party Quarter” of the NSDAP
The area around Königsplatz was the Nazi Party’s (NSDAP) power center. This was where the Party headquarters were located alongside monumental showcase architecture and an administrative center occupying many different buildings. We will take a walk through the former “Party quarter.”
The Munich Documentation Center stands on the historic site of the “Brown House,” the former Nazi Party headquarters. From the mid-1930s a large administrative center grew up in this neighborhood encompassing numerous central authorities and Party offices. The Party bought up an increasing number of properties in the area between Karlstraße and Gabelsbergerstraße. As many as 6,000 people worked for the Party here during the Nazi era. Munich thus remained the center of the Party bureaucracy throughout the Nazi dictatorship. The area around Königsplatz also played a central role as the location of the Nazi cult; here parades were held on Nazi commemorative occasions.
The tour combines an introduction to the historic site and a walk through the former Party quarter with a visit to the exhibition Munich and National Socialism.
