About the installation
In her tutorial the artist Ülkü Süngün teaches interested participants the correct way to pronounce the names of the ten people murdered by the NSU (National Socialist Underground). As the ten names are spoken over and over again, memories and a sense of homage resonate, creating a temporary memorial to Enver Şimşek, Abdurrahim Özüdoğru, Süleyman Taşköprü, Habil Kılıç, Mehmet Turgut, İsmail Yaşar, Theodoros Boulgarides, Mehmet Kubaşık, Halit Yozgat and Michèle Kiesewetter.
The tutorial is based on the participative performance TAKDİR. Die Anerkennung which Ülkü Süngün showed at the Munich Documentation Center on June 21, 2024. The word “Anerkennung” can be translated with esteem or appreciation. Süngün developed both the performance and the tutorial from her engagement as an activist as a way of inquiring into the practice of remembrance culture in public space. Who is publicly commemorated, who is honored with a memorial and who is not. How can memory be expressed through language? And what does a moment of remembrance mean for each of us individually? The large-format image bearing the ten calligraphed names is framed by Turkish marble paper, a traditional Turkish art form called Ebru. It creates a kind of stage set, symbolizing a further level of respect for the names of those murdered.
