Persecuted Jehovah’s Witness
Elisabeth Huber, um 1945 | BayHStA, LEA 1683
This wife of a baker left the Catholic church in 1931 and became a Jehovah's Witness. Elisabeth Huber was imprisoned three times, for a total of two years and nine months. On September 14, 1937, someone denounced her due to illegal activity as a Jehovah’s Witness. She was imprisoned the first time on December 15, 1937 after several interrogations because she had donated money for children of imprisoned Jehovah’s Witnesses. Huber protested: “I am appealing the arrest warrant because I do not feel that I am guilty. I was just doing my Christian duty.” (StAM, StAnW 8650) She was released after three days, however she was imprisoned again one week later and sentenced on February 12, 1938 by the Munich Special Court to three months in prison. Her sons were 16 and 19 years old at this point.
She was imprisoned again on November 27, 1942. The Gestapo found numerous writings of the Jehovah’s Witnesses with very critical statements about Hitler's wars, the persecution of Jews, and the persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses. Elisabeth Huber was sentenced on February 8, 1944 by the Munich District Court to three years and nine months of penal servitude.
After she was freed in 1945, Elisabeth Huber belonged to the community of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Munich-Westend until her death.
