With the opening of the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism in May 2015, the City of Munich acquired a central place of learning and remembrance at which to address the city’s Nazi past. The aim of the new centre, located on the site of the former Nazi Party headquarters, is to communicate in a rational and objective fashion information about the past and to reflect on it in a critical light. Its comprehensive exhibition Munich and National Socialism provides fact-based information about Munich’s role as the ‘Capital of the Movement’, highlighting and explaining historical connections as a basis for critical reflection and lasting remembrance.
This bilingual German-English volume explains the concept underlying the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism – which may be described in terms of the maxim ‘Remembrance Based on Knowledge’ – by taking the reader on an exemplary tour of the Munich Documentation Centre. The tour of the exhibition is expanded on with six contributions by the Documentation Centre’s Founding Director Winfried Nerdinger on various aspects of the culture of remembrance. The contributions consist of central texts and speeches given by Nerdinger in recent years including his speeches in 2015 and 2017 commemorating the November pogroms, his White Rose memorial lecture from 2016 and a number of previously unpublished lectures about the difficulties of confronting the city’s Nazi past and the long road to the establishment of the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism.
