This is America. Reflections on a Divided Country

In this event series renowned American intellectuals and experts take a look at transatlantic relations and shed light on historical and current developments on both sides of the Atlantic.

About

“The land of the free and the home of the brave” – for centuries America was the place that Europe’s disadvantaged, poor and desperate yearned for as they left the old continent to begin a new life in a free country. Although this freedom was only extended to citizens of color through the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the United States nonetheless enjoyed a reputation of being more liberal, more egalitarian and more democratic than Europe.

Since the election of Donald Trump the world has been looking at America and asking itself what has happened to a country that brought the world the “Pax Americana.” In the event series, renowned American intellectuals will examine historical developments and discuss the current situation.
